The second Estrella del Mar Charity and Celebrity Golf Tournament was held this fall. The bi-annual tournament took place Nov. 17-21 and benefited a foundation established by the master-planned community to promote education within the local region.

“We offer an unprecedented, naturally lush lifestyle just outside the old-world Mexican Riviera city of Mazatlan—and we’re the only oceanfront, master-planned resort and golf development in this area. It’s a perfect setting for a high-profile event that will also support the community. We’re excited to make this tournament a tradition here,” said Pat Butler, CEO and chairman of Denver-based Club Acquisition Company (CAC). Butler’s company joined forces with Paladin Realty Partners (formerly known as William E. Simon and Sons Realty) to become a 50 percent owner of Estrella del Mar in 2004. CAC serves as managing partner and oversees all aspects of the resort property and operations.

“Our new foundation will provide scholarships for students in Mexico who would otherwise be unable to continue or pursue further education,” Butler said. “We are committed to helping our local neighbors, and education is essential to building healthy, thriving communities. We plan to create a committee that will oversee the application and selection process. Our goal is to help as many students as possible to realize their dreams – the first step is access to learning.”

The Robert Trent Jones Jr. Golf Course—designed by world-renowned architect, it illuminates the area.

For 75 years, the Jones name has defined state-of-the-art golf course architecture. Robert Trent Jones Jr. golf courses host high-profile tours each year across the globe, including the PGA, LPGA, Asian Tour, and World Cup Tours.

At Estrella del Mar, Trent Jones Jr. ensured that his course design blended into the property’s specific terrain. All the elements of the landscape fuse together to produce a course that appeals to every level of golfing, from professional to beginner.

The course also pays tribute to the area’s exquisite natural environment with an onsite Sea Turtle Reserve Sanctuary. The reserve, strategically situated between the sixth and seventh holes, is home to the birth and release of thousands of baby sea turtles each year. Resident players and guests can observe the progress and growth of the turtles whenever they play or walk the course.
